For those not familiar, Mehul Revankar recently started a podcast named Noise2Signal. While there are a lot of podcasts out there and it is easy to lose track, this one stands out as Mehul has connections with a lot of folks that are significant in the history of information security. In fact, he interviewed Renaud Deraison who created Nessus and was one of the founders of Tenable. That is where Mehul and I met as we both worked there as well. My work with standardizing Nessus plugin names and other tasks meant we frequently crossed paths.
Of note, Mehul has also interviewed HD Moore who has great history in our industry. I recently did an interview with him myself while assisting Johnny Shaieb in his PhD work which involves better documenting the history of vulnerability databases and the CVE ecosystem.
I feel honored that Mehul asked to interview me and was pleased that he wanted to talk about vulnerability history and my efforts to document and preserve it. As he expected, the talk ran long so it’s a beefy, running over an hour and a half. But, if you are an anthropologist, historian, or interested in vulnerabilities it is a fun listen! Please note, everything I said is my opinion and not those of Mehul or Noise2Signal! We made that clear a ways in after I had some spicy comments about MITRE and CVE which should surprise no one!
