I’ve been sitting on 145 drafts in this blog, many going back as far as 2010. Slowly going through them, I try to figure out what my point was in some cases due to anemic notes. For others the decision is if it is still worth publishing. If so, do I bring it to today’s world and write accordingly? Or do I flesh it out based on the information I had and post it silently? Fun blog times!
For the drafts that died by the side of the road, I figured I’d share some of the topics I opted not to write about:
- 2010 – “He’s Bored, I’m Angry” was to be me ranting at a high level about what’s wrong with the InfoSec industry, covering topics like it being a popularity contest, security standards being the most minimal possible, and ethics.
- 2013 – OSF / OSVDB and why the data moved from free to commercial
- 2013 – Apple / iTunes and how annoying the app was stealing focus, even if minimized
- 2013 – Thoughts on people that are against the choice to commit suicide but fine with a DNR
- 2013 – The 2012 movie, ‘Dredd’, and using the judges as an allegory to InfoSec
- 2013 – “Libel & Mis-attribution as a Business Model” based on blatant errors by a CNET journalist
- 2013 – Attrition’s fight with SonicWall and their labeling our site as “Adult” without going past the main index page
- 2013 – “How to Lie With Polls” riffing on the book “How to Lie With Statistics” and citing several InfoSec rags with surveys with tiny sample groups versus a ridiculous number more professionals, and how they ‘conclude’ things.
- 2013 – “Information wants to be free?” discussing the nature of information, how not everyone wants it to be free, and moral outrage over some information when it can be used equally for good or bad.
- 2013 – A rant about pharmacists asking “You realize that is $$$?” as if I could live without insulin as a type 1 diabetic.
- 2013 – General thoughts on ethics in the computer industry, from pen-testing to hackers to plagiarism to marketing.
- 2013 – On how I hate the word “expert” as well as general thoughts on the use, and especially the overuse of it.
- 2013 – Thoughts and a rant on how absurd EULAs are, that we have to agree to one for software, but not an automobile or anything else.
- 2013 – “Politics – The stupid things they say…” Over a dozen examples of politicians saying things that are incredibly dumb and short-sighted, often illogical or contradicting prior things they said.
- 2013 – A tongue-in-cheek jab at the FBI comparing their formal mission statement at the time, with that copyright warning we so loved on VHS tapes, that were “investigated by the FBI”. Because that’s a good use of their time and doesn’t fall under the statement.
Out of all the drafts between 2010 and 2013, only two still have merit to eventually flesh out and publish. One is up in the air, titled “Computer Security History – From a Different View”. The challenge is that while there are extensive notes, I can’t immediately tell if there are some formatting issues making parts difficult to follow or not.
That’s all for now!
